Questions
What the calendar lists, its month names and the cities.
What does this calendar list?
Every festival, and every Ekadashi, Purnima, Amavasya, Pradosh and Sankashti, month by month for 16 cities. Where an entry has its own page here, it links to it, with the rule it follows and the times.
Which month names does this calendar use?
The ones the linked pages use. A dark-fortnight day carries two names: the amānta month, which runs from new moon to new moon, and the pūrṇimānta month, which runs from full moon to full moon and is a month ahead in the dark fortnight. A Purnima has the same name in both.
Why can a festival’s date differ abroad?
Each day is fixed by the tithi at a time of day at the place, such as sunrise, midday or moonrise. The tithi begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but which day’s sunrise or moonrise it reaches depends on the city, so a city far from Delhi can keep a day earlier or later.
