Calculation settings

Ninths of a sign

Each sign is cut into nine navāṃśas of 3°20′, starting from the sign itself, its 9th or its 5th as the sign is movable, fixed or dual. A nakshatra pada is the same 3°20′. BPHS 6.12, p. 41

The navamsa lagna

The rising degree crosses a navāṃśa in about thirteen minutes. Without an exact birth time, only the planets’ navamsa signs are given.

Vargottama

The navāṃśa that bears its own sign’s name is vargottama, and a planet in it stands in the same sign in the birth chart and the navamsa. The answer marks it. Phaladīpikā 3.1, p. 24

Questions

What the navamsa is and why it needs the time.

What is the navamsa chart?

The chart of ninths, the D9. Each sign is cut into nine navāṃśas of 3°20′. In a movable sign they start from the sign itself, in a fixed sign from its 9th, and in a dual sign from its 5th; every planet and the lagna are placed in the sign of the navāṃśa they fall in. BPHS 6.12, p. 41; Phaladīpikā 3.1, p. 24

Why does the navamsa need an exact birth time?

The lagna crosses a navāṃśa of 3°20′ in about thirteen minutes, so a birth time a few minutes off can change the navamsa lagna and every house in the D9. The Moon, the fastest planet, changes navāṃśa about every six hours.

What is vargottama?

The navāṃśa that bears the name of its own sign: the 1st of a movable sign, the 5th of a fixed sign and the 9th of a dual sign. A planet is vargottama when it occupies that navāṃśa, so it stands in the same sign in the birth chart (D1) and the navamsa (D9). Phaladīpikā 3.1, p. 24; Bṛhaj-jātaka 1.14, p. 22
