Popular practice; no text read gives the day. Our rule: the day whose midday, the third fifth of the daytime, the Bhādrapada śukla Aṣṭamī covers. When it covers both middays, or neither, the later day, whose sunrise holds the Aṣṭamī, is kept. The midday while the Aṣṭamī runs is shown as the pūjā time, as practice keeps it.

Questions

By our stated rule; popular practice throughout.

When is Radha Ashtami?

In Delhi, by our stated rule: Wednesday, 8 September 2027, midday 11:03 – 12:44; Sunday, 27 August 2028, midday 11:05 – 13:39; Saturday, 15 September 2029, midday 11:02 – 13:29. Popular practice; no text read gives the day.

Is Radha Ashtami in the classical texts?

No. The Nirṇaya-sindhu, the Dharmasindhu and the Vratarāja have no Rādhāṣṭamī, and none gives a day or time for Rādhā’s birth. The Dharmasindhu gives this Aṣṭamī to the Dūrvāṣṭamī and a pūjā of Jyeṣṭhā-devī. DS p. 56

Why is the date different in the US or UK?

The Aṣṭamī begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but midday comes at different hours, so a city far to the west or east can find the Aṣṭamī at another day’s midday.
