Questions

From the Dharmasindhu and the Vratarāja, with the page for each.

When is Sawan Somwar?

In Delhi, the Sawan Mondays of the north Indian count begin on 19 July 2027, 10 July 2028 and 30 July 2029, and those of the amānta count on 9 August 2027, 24 July 2028 and 13 August 2029. Each year’s page lists every Monday. DS p. 44

Why do some calendars list different Mondays?

They count the lunar month two ways. The pūrṇimānta count of north India ends each month at the full moon, so its Śrāvaṇa begins the day after the Āṣāḍha Pūrṇimā. The amānta count ends each month at the new moon, so its Śrāvaṇa begins a fortnight later. The texts do not say which count the vow follows. The two months overlap only in the bright fortnight, so only those Mondays are in both lists. DS p. 44

What is the Sawan Monday vow?

A Monday vow kept in Śrāvaṇa as the rule directs: a fast for those able, otherwise one meal at night. The Vratarāja has several Monday vows: a fourteen-year vow with worship at pradoṣa, a single-meal vow and an eight-Monday vow with a fast. DS p. 44; VR ff. 347–354
