Questions
By our stated rule; popular practice throughout, with the Dharmasindhu and the Sind descriptions as context.
When is Cheti Chand?
Thursday, 8 April 2027, Monday, 27 March 2028 and Sunday, 15 April 2029, for every city.
How is the day chosen?
By our rule, which is popular practice: Cheti Chand is the day whose sunset falls in the Caitra śukla Dvitīyā, the second tithi of Caitra’s bright fortnight. When two sunsets fall in it, the first is kept; when none does, the day whose sunrise falls in it. Our reading is that the descriptions’ “first day of Chet” is the first evening the young moon is seen, which by tithi is the Dvitīyā’s. The day is reckoned at Ahmedabad for every city.
Is it the same day as Gudi Padwa and Ugadi?
Often. Gudi Padwa and Ugadi fall on the Caitra śukla Pratipadā, and Cheti Chand on the first evening of the Dvitīyā that follows it, which is often the same day. At Ahmedabad, in 2027, Gudi Padwa and Ugadi fall on Wednesday, 7 April and Cheti Chand on Thursday, 8 April; in 2028, all three fall on Monday, 27 March; in 2029, Gudi Padwa and Ugadi fall on Saturday, 14 April and Cheti Chand on Sunday, 15 April.
What do the old gazetteers say?
The Gazetteer of the Province of Sind (1907) gives Cheti Chand as “the first day of the first month in the Hindu year”, kept chiefly by the Daryapanthis with fairs at Uderolal and Zindpir. The Imperial Gazetteer of India (1908) has Chetichand, the Hindu New Year, “the first day of Chet Sudh”, kept on the riverside. C. A. Kincaid’s Folk Tales of Sind and Guzarat (1925) records the tradition that Udero Lal was born on it. None of them gives a tithi. Gazetteer of the Province of Sind p. 206
Why are there two dates in 2029?
2029 has an extra (adhika) Caitra before the regular (nija) one, so the Dvitīyā comes twice. This page gives Sunday, 15 April, in the nija month, and shows Friday, 16 March, in the adhika month, as a day Cheti Chand is also kept on. Both are popular practice.
How the day is found
Read the methodology- Basis
- Popular practice; no text read gives the day. The rule is ours, stated in full.
- The day
- The Caitra śukla Dvitīyā, in amānta Caitra. The day whose sunset falls in it; when two do, the first; when none does, the day whose sunrise falls in it.
- Why the Dvitīyā
- Our reading of the descriptions, which call Cheti Chand the first day of Chet: the Sindhi month begins with the evening the young moon is first seen.
- The earlier evening
- When the Dvitīyā begins after sunset but within that evening’s pradoṣa (three muhūrtas), the earlier day is shown too. The next case is in 2033.
- An extra Caitra
- In a year with an adhika Caitra, as in 2029, the regular (nija) month’s day leads and the adhika month’s day is shown too.
- One ghaṭikā
- When moving either end of the Dvitīyā by one ghaṭikā (24 minutes) would change the day, the other day is shown too. No year from 2027 to 2035 has such a case.
