Questions

From the Nirṇaya-sindhu, p. 47, and the Vratarāja, ff. 82–86.

When is Sakat Chauth?

In Delhi: Monday, 25 January 2027 (moonrise 21:12), Saturday, 15 January 2028 (moonrise 21:31) and Wednesday, 3 January 2029 (moonrise 20:34). Each city keeps its own day by its own moonrise. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 47

Is Sakat Chauth a Sankashti Chaturthi?

Yes. It is the Saṅkaṣṭī Caturthī of Māgha, kept by the same rule, the dark Caturthī current at moonrise. The Vratarāja gives it a vow of its own, the Saṅkaṣṭa-hara Gaṇapati vow. Vratarāja ff. 82–86

Why are sesame laddus offered?

The Vratarāja’s vow for this day gives the naivedya as modakas fried in ghee, with sesame laddus. The texts read do not give a reason. Vratarāja ff. 82–86

Why is the date different in the US or UK?

The Moon rises at a different moment at each place, and each city’s clock is its own. The Caturthī is one span everywhere, so a city where it is not current at that evening’s moonrise can keep another day. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 47

How the day is found

Read the methodology
The day
The dark Caturthī of Māgha (pūrṇimānta; amānta Pauṣa), current at moonrise. When it is current at both moonrises, the earlier day, joined with the Tṛtīyā, is kept, and at neither, the later day. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 47, as for every Saṅkaṣṭī.
Moonrise
The Moon’s upper limb at the horizon, with refraction, rounded to the nearest minute: our convention, as on the Sankashti pages.
The vow
The Saṅkaṣṭa-hara Gaṇapati vow with its twenty-one names and its naivedya. Vratarāja ff. 82–86.
