Atmakaraka calculator
Your ātmakāraka and the other chara kārakas, ranked by degree within the sign, in both the seven- and eight-kāraka schemes of the texts.
- Ātmakāraka, amātyakāraka and darakāraka
- Seven and eight kārakas side by side
- Each with the degree that ranks it
Venus
Venus has the most degrees in its sign, 22°32′. Same in both schemes.
| Role | 8 karakas (with Rahu) | 7 karakas (Sun to Saturn) |
|---|---|---|
| Ātmakāraka (self) | Venus, 22°32′ | same |
| Amātyakāraka (minister) | Mars, 21°38′ | same |
| Bhrātṛkāraka (siblings) | Mercury, 20°36′ | same |
| Mātṛkāraka (mother) | Moon, 8°42′ | same |
| Pitṛkāraka (father) | Rahu, 8°22′ (30° less 21°37′) | not in this scheme |
| Putrakāraka (children) | Jupiter, 7°22′ | same |
| Jñātikāraka (kin) | Sun, 5°28′ | same |
| Dārakāraka (spouse) | Saturn, 0°13′ | same |
Chara karakas
Moving significators: the planets ranked by how far each has gone into its sign. The first, the ātmakāraka, signifies the self. Jaimini Upadeśa-sūtra 1.1.10
Two schemes
Seven kārakas use the Sun to Saturn; eight add Rāhu, which can then take any rank. When the schemes agree, one answer is shown; when they differ, both.
The darakaraka
The planet with the fewest degrees, last of the kārakas, signifies the spouse. It is the one most often different between the two schemes.
Questions
The rule from the Jaimini sūtras and BPHS, with the verses.
What is the atmakaraka?
The planet with the most degrees within its sign, whatever the sign: the first of the chara (moving) kārakas. The others follow in falling degrees: amātya, bhrātṛ, mātṛ, pitṛ, putra, jñāti and dāra, the darakāraka last. Rāhu, moving backwards, is counted as 30° less its degrees. Jaimini Upadeśa-sūtra 1.1.10–18; BPHS 32.3–6, 32.13–15
Seven or eight karakas?
Both texts allow both: seven, the Sun to Saturn, or eight, adding Rāhu. The Jaimini sūtra gives the eight as another view, and BPHS’s commentary uses the eight when two planets have the same degrees. This page shows both and favours neither. Jaimini 1.1.19 also records that some take the mother and the children from one planet. Jaimini Upadeśa-sūtra 1.1.10; BPHS 32.1–2
What if two planets have the same degree?
The minutes decide, then the seconds. When two planets are truly tied, BPHS says to read that kāraka’s results from the fixed (sthira) kārakas instead. The answer says when a tie occurs. BPHS 32.3–5, 32.16–17
How it is worked out
Read the methodology- Ranking
- By degrees within the sign, then minutes, then seconds; the sign itself does not count (BPHS 32.3–5).
- Rāhu
- Counted as 30° less its degrees, since it moves backwards (BPHS 32.6). Ketu is never a chara kāraka.
- Schemes
- 7 karakas (Sun to Saturn) and 8 karakas (with Rahu), both from Jaimini Upadeśa-sūtra 1.1.10 and BPHS 32.1–2.
