The rising sign

The sign on the eastern horizon at birth. It is the first house of the kundli, and the other houses follow from it.

Why the time matters

The rising degree moves about a degree every four minutes, so each sign rises for about two hours. Check the time on the birth record.

No birth time?

Without a time there is no lagna. The Moon’s sign can stand in as the first house, the Chandra lagna. Find your Moon sign

Questions

What the lagna is, and why the time matters.

What is the lagna?

The sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of birth, the ascendant. Houses are counted from it. For the example, born 19 January 2001 at 14:05 in New Delhi, it is Vrishabha (Taurus) at 15°12′.

Why do I need an exact birth time?

The rising degree moves through the whole zodiac in about a day, roughly a degree every four minutes, so a sign rises for about two hours. A birth time a few minutes off can change the degree, and near the edge of a sign, the sign.

Why is my Vedic rising sign different from my Western one?

The Vedic zodiac is measured from the stars and the Western one from the March equinox. The two now differ by about 24°, the ayanāṃśa, so an ascendant in roughly the last 24° of a Vedic sign is in the next sign of the Western zodiac.

What is the Moon chart (Chandra lagna)?

A chart with the Moon’s sign taken as the first house. It is used when the birth time is unknown, since the Moon’s sign needs only the date, and alongside the lagna chart when it is known.

How it is worked out

Read the methodology
Lagna
The ecliptic degree rising on the eastern horizon for the moment and place of birth, in the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri unless you choose another).
Western sign
The same degree with the ayanāṃśa added back: the tropical rising sign.
Ephemeris
Swiss Ephemeris; the time is read in the place’s own time zone and history.
