Questions

From the Dharmasindhu p. 31, with the page for each.

When is Ugadi?

In Delhi: Wednesday, 7 April 2027, Monday, 27 March 2028 and Saturday, 14 April 2029. Each city keeps its own day by its own sunrise and sunset. Dharmasindhu p. 31

Is Gudi Padwa the same day as Ugadi?

Yes. Ugadi in the south and Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra are popular names for the new year day the texts describe. The texts call it the beginning of the year, on the Caitra śukla Pratipadā. Dharmasindhu p. 31

What are the new year rites?

A bath and the saṅkalpa for the year. A flag raised. Neem leaves. Hearing the year’s forecast. In an adhika Caitra, the new-year bath and saṅkalpa fall in the adhika month, and the flag, the neem leaves, the forecast and the Navarātri in the true month. Dharmasindhu p. 31

Why is the date different in the US or UK?

Ugadi is decided by the Pratipadā at sunrise at the city. The tithi begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but sunrise and sunset come at different hours, so a city far to the west or east can keep another day. Dharmasindhu p. 31

How the day is found

Read the methodology
The day
The Caitra śukla Pratipadā current at sunrise. If it is current at sunrise on both days, or on neither, the earlier day is taken. Dharmasindhu p. 31.
The Navarātri
The Caitra Navarātri begins on the Pratipadā by its own rule (NS p. 113; DS p. 31), usually the same day.
