Months for entering a new house

The Dharmasindhu gives entry the house-building months, Vaiśākha, Phālguna, Pauṣa, Śrāvaṇa and Mārgaśīrṣa, with Nārada adding Jyeṣṭha, Kārtika and Māgha. The Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi’s northern-course rule is stricter for a new house, and the dates here follow it. DS p. 242

Jupiter and Venus

  • For a new house, no entry while Jupiter or Venus is set, “infant” or “old”: the commentary applies the marriage chapter’s rule, and Vasiṣṭha asks for the northern course with Jupiter and Venus strong. MC 13.1 commentary, p. 438; MC 1.46
  • Set within the Sūrya-siddhānta’s distance from the Sun, in time-degrees: 11 for Jupiter; for Venus, 8 while it is retrograde and 10 otherwise, measured at the city. Sūrya-siddhānta 9.6–7
  • Infancy and old age by the Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi’s counts: Jupiter 15 days each; Venus infant for 3 days after rising in the east and 10 after rising in the west, old for 15 days before setting in the east and 5 before setting in the west. MC 5.27, p. 188
  • Jupiter in Leo or Capricorn bars entry for the whole of its stay. MC 1.48, p. 40
  • Siṃhastha, Jupiter’s stay in Leo, runs from 31 Oct 2026 to 24 Jul 2028, in three spans. Nashik Kumbh Mela 2027

MC 5.28 records 10, 7 or 3 days as other counts, and the Dharmasindhu takes 7 days either side as the middle view. A day clear only by the shortest count is listed among the days that miss one rule. MC 5.28, p. 188; DS p. 5

The day and the hour

  • The Moon in one of Vasiṣṭha’s ten stars: Citrā, the three Uttaras, Rohiṇī, Mṛgaśira, Anurādhā, Dhaniṣṭhā, Revatī or Śatabhiṣā. Vasiṣṭha in MC 13.1 commentary, p. 439
  • The pot chakra: counting the Sun’s star as the 1st, the Moon’s star is not the 1st (fire), the 2nd to 5th (desertion), the 14th to 17th (quarrel) or the 18th to 21st (destruction). MC 13.6, p. 446; DS p. 242
  • Not a riktā tithi (Caturthī, Navamī, Caturdaśī) or Amāvasyā, and not a Sunday or Tuesday. MC 13.4, p. 442
  • A fixed lagna, or a dual one, never a movable one, and its navāṃśa not movable. MC 13.1, 13.4 and commentary, pp. 442–443
  • The 4th and 8th houses empty of every planet, and the Moon not in the 1st, 6th, 8th or 12th. MC 13.4 and commentary, p. 443
  • From each window go Bhadrā, the bad yogas’ portions, the gaṇḍānta junctions, the Sun’s saṅkrānti, mahāpāta and the weekday-star yogas, as for marriage. MC 13.1 commentary, p. 439
  • Kept and marked: the dark fortnight after Daśamī, and Saturday, which Vasiṣṭha gives “stability, with a fear of thieves”. Vasiṣṭha in MC 13.1 commentary, pp. 438, 443
  • The vāstu-pūjā and bhūta-bali are done the day before entry. MC 13.3a, 1925 printing p. 441; DS p. 242

Not applied here, because they need the owner’s chart: the lagna should not be the 8th sign from the owner’s birth lagna or Moon sign, and is best 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th from them. MC 13.1, 13.4

An old or rebuilt house

An old house, or one rebuilt after fire or flood, also allows Mārgaśīrṣa, Kārtika and Śrāvaṇa and four more stars (Śatabhiṣā, Puṣya, Svātī and Dhaniṣṭhā), and the setting of Jupiter or Venus and Jupiter in Leo or Capricorn need not be checked. The dates on this page are for a new house. MC 13.2, 1925 printing p. 440

Questions

From the Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi’s chapter on house entry and the Dharmasindhu, with the page for each.

When is the next griha pravesh muhurat?

In Delhi, Monday, 15 March 2027, with the Moon in Mṛgaśirā; the first lagna window is Virgo, 18:38 – 19:08. Delhi has 4 in 2026, 6 in 2027 and 1 in 2028 house-entry dates for a new house. MC 13.1, 13.4, 13.6

Does the door direction change the date?

Yes. The Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi ties the tithi to the direction the main door faces: Pūrṇā tithis (Pañcamī, Daśamī, Pūrṇimā) for an east door, Nandā (Pratipadā, Ṣaṣṭhī, Ekādaśī) for south, Bhadrā (Dvitīyā, Saptamī, Dvādaśī) for west and Jayā (Tṛtīyā, Aṣṭamī, Trayodaśī) for north. It keeps the Sun on the door’s left side, and asks for a star of the door’s quarter: Kṛttikā to Āśleṣā for east, Maghā to Viśākhā for south, Anurādhā to Śravaṇa for west and Dhaniṣṭhā to Bharaṇī for north. The door switch on this page narrows the dates to your door. MC 13.1, 13.5, p. 444; 11.33 commentary, p. 353

Which months are good for griha pravesh?

Māgha, Phālguna, Vaiśākha and Jyeṣṭha, with the Sun in its northern course. Nārada counts Kārtika and Mārgaśīrṣa as middling. Caitra and Āṣāḍha are barred, and so is the Sun in Cancer, Virgo or Aquarius. MC 13.1 and commentary, pp. 437–439

What about an old or rebuilt house?

An old house, or one rebuilt after fire or flood, also allows Mārgaśīrṣa, Kārtika and Śrāvaṇa and four more stars, and the checks on Jupiter and Venus are dropped. The dates on this page are for a new house. MC 13.2, 1925 printing p. 440

Why are there no dates in some months?

The month rules rule out most of the year: the Sun’s southern course (mid-July to mid-January), Caitra and Āṣāḍha, and the Sun in Aquarius. Within the four months a day still needs one of ten stars that also passes the pot chakra, an allowed tithi and weekday, and a fixed or dual lagna with the 4th and 8th houses empty, so few days remain. MC 13.1, 13.4, 13.6

Why is the date different in my city?

The windows are lagnas, which rise at different clock times in each city, and the 4th and 8th houses and the Moon’s house follow the lagna. Sunrise also decides which civil day a window belongs to, and the setting and rising of Jupiter and Venus are seen from the city.

How the dates are found

Read the methodology
The day
Sunrise to the next sunrise at the city. Listed when its lunar month is Māgha, Phālguna, Vaiśākha or Jyeṣṭha with the Sun in its northern course and not adhika, the Sun is outside Cancer, Virgo and Aquarius, Jupiter and Venus are clear, Jupiter is outside Leo and Capricorn, the star is one of ten and passes the pot chakra, the tithi is not riktā or Amāvasyā, and it is not a Sunday or Tuesday (MC 13.1, 13.4, 13.6).
The window
A fixed or dual lagna whose navāṃśa is not movable, with the 4th and 8th houses empty and the Moon out of the 1st, 6th, 8th and 12th (MC 13.1, 13.4). From it go Bhadrā, the bad yogas’ portions, the gaṇḍānta junctions, 16½ ghaṭikās either side of the Sun’s saṅkrānti (our reading), mahāpāta and the weekday-star yogas, as for marriage (p. 439).
The door
MC 13.5’s tithi class and the Sun’s side for each direction, and MC 13.1’s stars of the door’s quarter (the 11.33 commentary, p. 353), applied by the door switch.
Jupiter and Venus
Set by the Sūrya-siddhānta’s time-degrees (Jupiter 11; Venus 8 retrograde, 10 direct), measured from the rising or setting at the city; infancy and old age by MC 5.27’s counts.
Flags
The dark fortnight after Daśamī and Saturday stay in the list, marked as Vasiṣṭha grades them.
Not applied
The owner’s birth lagna and Moon sign (MC 13.1, 13.4), the planets’ preferred places (MC 13.3b), and the old-house rules (MC 13.2).
