Questions

From the Dharmasindhu p. 49, with the page for each.

When is Raksha Bandhan?

In Delhi: Friday, 28 August 2026, Tuesday, 17 August 2027 and Saturday, 5 August 2028. Each city keeps its own day by its own sunrise and sunset. Dharmasindhu p. 49

Why is Rakhi not tied during Bhadra?

Bhadrā, the Viṣṭi karaṇa that fills the Pūrṇimā’s first half, is avoided for the rakṣā: a verse quoted by the Nirṇaya-sindhu says a rakhi tied in it harms the king. It is tied once Bhadrā is over. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 180

Why do some calendars give another day?

The Nirṇaya-sindhu ties the rakṣā on the earlier day’s afternoon, after Bhadrā even at night, and never on the Pūrṇimā joined to Pratipadā. This page follows the Dharmasindhu’s rule and shows the Nirṇaya-sindhu’s day beside it where they differ. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 180; Dharmasindhu p. 49

Why is the date different in the US or UK?

Raksha Bandhan is decided by how long the Pūrṇimā lasts after sunrise at the city. The tithi begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but sunrise and sunset come at different hours, so a city far to the west or east can keep another day. Dharmasindhu p. 49

How the day is found
