Skanda Sashti is the śukla Ṣaṣṭhī joined to the Pañcamī. It is kept on the day on which the Ṣaṣṭhī begins between sunrise and sunset, and when it begins at night, on the first day whose sunrise it holds. Reading the joining as by day is ours. Vratarāja f. 108; Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 48; Dharmasindhu pp. 9–10

The Bhaviṣya, through Hemādri in the Vratarāja, makes every Ṣaṣṭhī Skanda’s, in both fortnights, kept with fruit or a night meal and without oil; this list gives each śukla Ṣaṣṭhī. Vratarāja f. 108

In Delhi, on Sunday, 15 November 2026: the Kārttika śukla Ṣaṣṭhī, popularly Kanda Sashti (Soorasamharam). In Delhi, the Ṣaṣṭhī begins at 23:24 on Saturday, after sunset, so it is kept on Sunday, the first day whose sunrise has it. Vratarāja f. 108; Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 48; Dharmasindhu pp. 9–10

What is Skanda Sashti?

The Ṣaṣṭhī vow to Skanda. The Bhaviṣya, through Hemādri in the Vratarāja, gives it in both fortnights, kept with fruit or a night meal and without oil. This list gives the śukla Ṣaṣṭhī of each month, joined to the Pañcamī. Vratarāja f. 108

How is the day chosen?

The Ṣaṣṭhī is kept joined to the Pañcamī: on the day on which it begins between sunrise and sunset, and when it begins at night, on the first day whose sunrise it holds. The texts ask for the Pañcamī-joined Ṣaṣṭhī; reading the joining as by day is ours. Vratarāja f. 108; Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 48; Dharmasindhu pp. 9–10

Why can the date differ by city?

The Ṣaṣṭhī begins at the same moment everywhere, but sunrise and sunset come at different hours. A Ṣaṣṭhī that begins in daylight in one city can begin at night in another, which moves its day to the next sunrise. Vratarāja f. 108; Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 48; Dharmasindhu pp. 9–10
