Where these times come from

Abhijit muhurta

Muhurta Chintamani divides the daytime into fifteen muhurtas, each a fifteenth of the time from sunrise to sunset, and names them. Its commentary says the eighth is Abhijit, which falls around local noon. Muhurta Chintamani 6.50

The text also lists the muhurtas forbidden on each weekday. For Wednesday it names Abhijit, so on Wednesdays Abhijit is shown as not used. The other weekdays’ forbidden muhurtas appear under times to avoid as durmuhurta. Muhurta Chintamani 6.52

Brahma muhurta

The Manusmriti (4.92) names the time before dawn, brahma muhurta, for waking. This page shows the 14th of the night’s fifteen muhurtas, which ends one muhurta before sunrise. A printed source for that placement is still being sought.

Choghadiya

Amrit, Shubh and Labh are the good choghadiya; Char, counted as neutral, is left out of the good times here. The classical texts read do not describe choghadiya; the periods here follow current almanac practice. Today’s choghadiya

Rahu kalam, Yamaganda and Gulika kalam

Each is one eighth of the daytime that the Kalaprakasika counts as inauspicious, a different eighth on each weekday. Rahu kaal today · Kalaprakasika, pp. 175–176

Muhurat dates by occasion

For a marriage, the month, the nakshatra, the tithi and the places of Jupiter and Venus all count, by the sixth chapter of Muhurta Chintamani and the Dharmasindhu. Vivah muhurat: the marriage dates

For entering a new house, the month, the nakshatra, the tithi and the door’s direction count, by the thirteenth chapter of Muhurta Chintamani and the Dharmasindhu (p. 242). Griha pravesh muhurat: the house-entry dates

For a child’s first tonsure, the Sun’s northern course, the month, the child’s age and a clear Jupiter and Venus count, by Muhurta Chintamani (5.26–5.29) and the Dharmasindhu (p. 137). Mundan muhurat: the first tonsure dates

For a baby’s first rice feeding, the baby’s month, the tithi, the weekday and an empty tenth house count, by Muhurta Chintamani (5.17–5.18) and the Dharmasindhu (p. 135). Annaprashan muhurat: the first feeding dates

For a child’s first letters, the Sun’s northern course and the child’s fifth year count, by Muhurta Chintamani (5.37) and the Dharmasindhu (p. 138). In Kerala the first letters are written on Vijayadashami, and the page lists both. Vidyarambham: the first letters dates

For buying a vehicle, the Moon in one of six buying nakshatras, the weekday and the tithi count, by Muhurta Chintamani (2.16–2.18) and the Vyavahāroccaya quoted in its commentary. The texts speak of horses, elephants and chariots. Reading their rules for a car or a two-wheeler is ours. Vehicle purchase muhurat: the dates to buy a car or bike

The texts read give no separate rule for buying a house or land. These dates follow Muhurta Chintamani’s general rule for buying (2.16). Property purchase muhurat: the dates to buy a house or land
