Anuradha, pada 2
The Moon was at 8°42′ in Vrishchika, in Anurādhā.
The Vimśottarī dasha starts in Saturn’s period, with 11 years, 4 months, 6 days of it left at birth. See every period.
The janma nakshatra
The nakshatra the Moon was in at birth. It names the birth star, gives the first sound for a name, and starts the Vimśottarī dasha. All 27 nakshatras
Four padas
Each nakshatra is cut into four padas of 3°20′. The pada fixes the navamsa sign and the name sound. Avakahaḍā-cakram, pp. 22–23
The dasha it starts
The first period of the Vimśottarī dasha belongs to the nakshatra’s lord; the time left of it at birth follows from how far the Moon had still to go. Bṛhaj-jyotiḥsāra v. 411
Questions
Definitions and the rules they come from.
What is a janma nakshatra?
The nakshatra the Moon was in at birth. For the example, born 19 January 2001 at 14:05 in New Delhi, it is Anuradha, pada 2.
How is the nakshatra calculated?
The sidereal zodiac is cut into 27 equal nakshatras of 13°20′ from 0° Mesha, and the Moon’s longitude at the moment of birth falls in one of them. Each nakshatra has four padas of 3°20′.
What if the Moon changed nakshatra on my birth day?
The Moon moves about 13° a day, a little less than one nakshatra, so it changes nakshatra on most days. With a birth time the answer is exact. Without one the Moon is taken at noon, and the answer says when the nakshatra changed that day.
What is a pada?
A quarter of a nakshatra, 3°20′. The 108 padas run through the signs from Mesha, so each pada also has a navamsa sign, and each has the name sound of the Avakahaḍā chakra. Avakahaḍā-cakram, pp. 22–23
Which dasha does my nakshatra start?
The Vimśottarī dasha starts with the period of the nakshatra’s lord, and the part of it left at birth matches the part of the nakshatra the Moon had still to cross. Anuradha’s lord is Saturn, so the example starts in Saturn’s dasha. Bṛhaj-jyotiḥsāra vv. 411–414, p. 150
