Popular practice; no text read gives the day. The six-nāḍikā test is our statement of common Kerala usage, not a rule from a text.

  • A civil day belongs to Chiṅṅam when the Sun is in sidereal Siṃha at its sunrise.
  • Onam, Tiruvoṇam, is the Chiṅṅam day whose sunrise falls in the Śravaṇa nakṣatra with at least six nāḍikās (2 h 24 min) of Śravaṇa left after it. If less remains, Onam is the day before, which holds most of it.
  • When Chiṅṅam holds two Tiruvoṇams, both are shown; the rule gives two days and does not choose.

Questions

By our stated rule; popular practice throughout.

When is Onam?

In Kochi, by our stated rule: Sunday, 12 September 2027; Friday, 1 September 2028; Wednesday, 22 August 2029. Each is Tiruvoṇam in the month of Chiṅṅam. Popular practice; no text read gives the day.

How is the Onam date found?

By our stated rule, from common Kerala usage: Onam is the day in the solar month of Chiṅṅam (Chingam) whose sunrise falls in the Śravaṇa nakṣatra (Tiruvoṇam) with at least six nāḍikās, 2 h 24 min, of it left; if less remains, the day before. A day is in Chiṅṅam when the Sun is in sidereal Siṃha at its sunrise.

Is Onam in the classical texts?

No. The Nirṇaya-sindhu, the Dharmasindhu and the Vratarāja have no Onam. The Śravaṇa-dvādaśī and the Vāmana-jayantī share its Vāmana story, but they are lunar days and give no date for it. DS pp. 56, 58

Why is the date different in Sydney or other cities?

The Sun enters Siṃha and the Moon enters and leaves Śravaṇa at the same moment everywhere, but sunrise comes at different hours. The sunrise that holds Śravaṇa with six nāḍikās left can then fall on another day.
