Nashik Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027
By the texts, Siṃhastha is Jupiter’s stay in sidereal Leo, and the Godāvarī bath is of great merit throughout it. The 2027 Simhastha Kumbh Mela at Nashik-Trimbakeshwar falls within it.
Simhastha begins
Saturday, 31 October 2026
Jupiter enters sidereal Leo at 12:02 IST on 31 Oct 2026. That is in 14 days.

The Godavari bath
The Godāvarī bath is of great merit through the whole of Jupiter’s stay in Leo. The texts read fix no bathing day within it. Dharmasindhu p. 5; Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 22
The texts require tonsure and fasting of pilgrims to the Godāvarī, but not of those who live on its banks. Dharmasindhu p. 5; Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 22
The pilgrimage to the Godāvarī is not barred, even with Jupiter in Leo. For it, and for Gayā, the texts lift the faults of an intercalary month and of Jupiter or Venus set. Dharmasindhu p. 5; MC 1.48 commentary, p. 41; Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 24
आद्यासौ गौतमी गंगा द्वितीया जाह्नवी स्मृता । सर्वतीर्थफलं स्नानाद्गौतम्यां सिंहगे गुरौ The Gautamī (the Godāvarī) is the first Gaṅgā and the Jāhnavī the second. Bathing in the Gautamī with Jupiter in Leo gives the fruit of every tīrtha. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 22 What Simhastha bars
While Jupiter is in Leo, the Dharmasindhu bars ear-piercing, tonsure, upanayana, marriage, pilgrimage to a deity, vows, building, consecrating an image and taking saṃnyāsa. The Nirṇaya-sindhu agrees. Dharmasindhu p. 5; Nirṇaya-sindhu pp. 22, 451
This site’s marriage, mundan and griha pravesh lists apply the bar, so none of them gives a day while Jupiter is in Leo.
The lists: Vivah muhurat 2027, Mundan muhurat 2027 and Griha pravesh muhurat 2027.
The Dharmasindhu limits the bar by region: everywhere only while Jupiter is in Maghā or in what it calls the Leo portion (siṃhāṃśa), which it does not define; after that, no fault south of the Godāvarī or north of the Gaṅgā, while between the two rivers marriage and upanayana stay barred for the whole stay. With the Sun in Aries there is no fault anywhere. This site’s lists do not apply the relaxation. Dharmasindhu p. 5; Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 452
Ujjain, Haridwar and the Krishna bath
Ujjain’s Simhastha Kumbh, in 2028, falls in the third span; its mela authority sets its days.
Haridwar’s 2027 Kumbh, early in the year, is separate, and its own authority sets its dates.
With Jupiter in Virgo, from 26 Nov 2027, the Dharmasindhu gives the same great merit to the Kṛṣṇā bath. Dharmasindhu p. 5
Questions
From the Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi, the Dharmasindhu and the Nirṇaya-sindhu, with the page for each.
When does Simhastha begin?
Jupiter enters sidereal Leo at 12:02 IST on 31 Oct 2026. By the texts, Siṃhastha is Jupiter’s stay in Leo; this one runs in three spans to 15:36 IST on 24 Jul 2028. MC 1.48, p. 40
What are the Amrit Snan dates of the Nashik Kumbh 2027?
As announced by the mela organisers (reported by PTI, 1 Jun 2025): the first Amrit Snan on Monday, 2 August 2027; the second Amrit Snan on Tuesday, 31 August 2027; the third and last Amrit Snan, at Nashik on Saturday, 11 September 2027; the third and last Amrit Snan, at Trimbakeshwar on Sunday, 12 September 2027. No text read fixes these days. The PTI report
Is the Godāvarī bath meritorious only on certain days?
No. The texts give the Godāvarī bath great merit through the whole of Jupiter’s stay in Leo, and they fix no bathing day within it. Dharmasindhu p. 5; Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 22
Are marriages held during Simhastha?
The texts bar marriage while Jupiter is in Leo, with tonsure, upanayana, vows, building and other rites. This site’s marriage, mundan and griha pravesh lists apply the bar, so none of them gives a day while Jupiter is in Leo. The Dharmasindhu limits the bar by region, and these lists do not apply that relaxation. Dharmasindhu p. 5; Nirṇaya-sindhu pp. 22, 451 Vivah muhurat 2027
Why is there a break in 2027?
Jupiter turns retrograde and is back in Cancer from 25 Jan 2027 to 26 Jun 2027. The texts read give no rule for a Siṃhastha broken this way, so by our reading those months are not Siṃhastha. The Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi records that some also bar Jupiter retrograde or in aticāra, its fast motion. MC 1.48, p. 40 Jupiter retrograde
What about Ujjain’s Simhastha in 2028?
Ujjain’s Simhastha Kumbh, in 2028, falls in the third span; its mela authority sets its days.
