Questions

From the Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 160; Dharmasindhu p. 43, with the page for each.

When is Guru Purnima?

In Delhi: Sunday, 18 July 2027, Thursday, 6 July 2028 and Wednesday, 25 July 2029. Each city keeps its own day by its own sunrise and sunset. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 160; Dharmasindhu p. 43

Is Guru Purnima the same as Vyasa Purnima?

Yes, the Āṣāḍha Pūrṇimā, when the texts set the Vyāsa-pūjā. Guru Purnima and Vyasa Purnima are popular names; the texts call the rite the Vyāsa-pūjā. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 160

Who keeps the Vyasa Puja?

The texts set the Vyāsa-pūjā for ascetics: on this Pūrṇimā saṃnyāsins shave and worship, as part of their resolve to stay in one place for the four months of the rains (cāturmāsya). Popularly, householders worship their own guru on this day; the pages read do not prescribe it. Dharmasindhu p. 43

Why is the date different in the US or UK?

Guru Purnima is decided by the Pūrṇimā after sunrise at the city. The tithi begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but sunrise and sunset come at different hours, so a city far to the west or east can keep another day. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 160
