Dates use a year of 365.2425 days, our convention.
The nine periods
120 years in all, always in this order. Each nakshatra belongs to one of the nine lords, so the Moon’s nakshatra at birth decides where in the cycle a life begins. Bṛhaj-jyotiḥsāra vv. 411–414
Questions
The dasha rule from the Bṛhaj-jyotiḥsāra, and our conventions.
What is Vimshottari dasha?
A cycle of 120 years (vimśottarī, "one hundred and twenty") divided among the nine planets in a fixed order: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17 years. Bṛhaj-jyotiḥsāra vv. 411–414, p. 150
How is the first dasha found?
From the Moon’s nakshatra at birth: the first period belongs to that nakshatra’s lord, and the part of it left at birth matches the part of the nakshatra the Moon had still to cross. For the example, Anuradha gives Saturn. Bṛhaj-jyotiḥsāra v. 414
What year length is used?
365.2425 days, the Gregorian year. Other conventions are in use (365.25 days, the sidereal year, or a year of 360 days) and no source read fixes the count, so this is our convention.
What is antardasha?
A sub-period. Each mahadasha is divided among all nine planets in the same order, starting with its own lord, each in proportion to its years. The answer lists the antardashas of the running mahadasha.
How it is worked out
Read the methodology- Lords and years
- Bṛhaj-jyotiḥsāra vv. 411–414: the nine lords from Kṛttikā, with their years.
- Start
- The Moon’s nakshatra at birth gives the first lord; the part of the nakshatra still to run gives the balance.
- Year
- 365.2425 days (the Gregorian year): our convention, since no source read fixes the count.
- Privacy
- Your details go to the calculation once and are not stored, unless you open the full kundli, which saves a chart.
