Questions

From the Nirṇaya-sindhu, p. 293, the Dharmasindhu, pp. 9 and 76, and the Vratarāja, ff. 81–82.

When is Karwa Chauth?

In Delhi: Thursday, 29 October 2026 (moonrise 20:12), Monday, 18 October 2027 (moonrise 19:30) and Saturday, 7 October 2028 (moonrise 20:01). Each city keeps its own day by its own moonrise. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 293

Why is the moonrise time different in each city?

The Moon rises at a different moment at each place, earlier in the east and later in the west, and each city’s clock is its own. The Caturthī is one span everywhere, so a city where it is not current at that evening’s moonrise can keep another day. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 293

Is Karva Chauth the same festival?

Yes. Karwa and Karva are two spellings of karvā, the pot (karaka) given in the rite. The texts call the day Karaka-caturthī. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 293

How the day is found

Read the methodology
The day
The dark Caturthī ending amānta Āśvina (pūrṇimānta Kārtika), current at moonrise. When it is current at both moonrises, the earlier day is kept, and at neither, the later day. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 293; Dharmasindhu pp. 9, 76.
Moonrise
The Moon’s upper limb at the horizon, with refraction, as for Saṅkaṣṭī Caturthī, rounded to the nearest minute.
The vrata
The pūjā at nightfall and the arghya after moonrise (Vratarāja ff. 81, 82). The fast until that arghya is our reading of the kathā (ff. 81–82).
Not in the texts
A fixed pūjā muhurat, the pre-dawn meal (sargī) and the sieve: popular customs the texts read do not mention.
