When mundan can be done

The day and the hour

  • The Moon in one of twelve stars: Aśvinī, Mṛgaśira, Punarvasu, Puṣya, Hasta, Citrā, Svātī, Jyeṣṭhā, Śravaṇa, Dhaniṣṭhā, Śatabhiṣā or Revatī. MC 5.29; Vasiṣṭha, p. 190; DS p. 137
  • Tithi 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 11 or 13, in either fortnight. MC 5.29; Vasiṣṭha, p. 190; DS p. 137
  • Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, or Monday in the bright fortnight. MC 5.29; Parāśara, p. 190
  • The lagna and its navāṃśa in a benefic’s sign: Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius or Pisces. MC 5.29; Kaśyapa, p. 190
  • The 8th house empty, except for Venus. MC 5.29; Parāśara, p. 190
  • None of the waning Moon, Mars, Saturn or the Sun in a kendra. The Moon counts as waning outside tithis 9 to 22, our reading of the Bṛhaj-jātaka. MC 5.30; Bṛhaj-jātaka 2.5
  • From each window go Bhadrā, the bad yogas’ portions, the gaṇḍānta junctions, the Sun’s saṅkrānti, mahāpāta and the weekday-star yogas. MC 1.34–35, 1.43–45, 6.41, 6.78
  • Kept and marked: a dark Trayodaśī, since the Dharmasindhu keeps the dark fortnight except its last three days. DS p. 137

The Prayoga-pārijāta and the Dharmasindhu allow Sunday for brāhmaṇas, Tuesday for kṣatriyas and Saturday for vaiśyas and śūdras. This list keeps to the weekdays allowed for all. MC p. 190; DS p. 137

The child’s age

From the 3rd year, in an odd year (the 3rd, 5th or 7th), counted from conception or from birth. The Dharmasindhu also allows the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 5th year, or with the upanayana, by family custom; families who tonsure with the upanayana use its muhūrta. MC 5.29; Vasiṣṭha, p. 189; DS p. 137

Your child’s own dates

The dates here hold for any child in the city. With the child’s chart the texts also bar the birth month, the 8th sign from the birth lagna or Moon sign, and an unfavourable tārā, which MC 5.32 excuses in some cases. The birth star differs between the texts: Kaśyapa calls it good for a Vedic tonsure, and the Dharmasindhu avoids it for any shave. MC 5.29–30, 5.32, p. 190; DS p. 137

For an eldest child, no auspicious rite in Jyeṣṭha (the Ratnamālā), and some add Mārgaśīrṣa. Jyeṣṭha dates are marked in the table. MC 5.33 commentary, p. 193; DS p. 137

If the mother is pregnant

Not while the mother is past the fifth month of pregnancy, unless the child is over five or the tonsure is done with the upanayana. MC 5.31, p. 191; Nārada, p. 192; DS p. 137

Questions

From the Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi and the Dharmasindhu, with the page for each.

When is the next mundan muhurat?

In Delhi, Thursday, 18 February 2027, with the Moon in Puṣya; the first lagna window is Libra, 22:17 – 22:33. 2027: 8 dates. 2028: No day in 2028 passes every rule. The rule missed most often is Jupiter’s sign (MC 1.48, p. 40). Jupiter is in Leo from 28 Feb to 24 Jul 2028 (MC 1.48). Venus is old, set or infant from 23 May to 10 Jun 2028 (MC 5.26–27). 2029: No day in 2029 passes every rule. MC 5.26–30

At what age is mundan done?

From the 3rd year, in an odd year (the 3rd, 5th or 7th), counted from conception or from birth. The Dharmasindhu also allows the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 5th year, or with the upanayana, by family custom; families who tonsure with the upanayana use its muhūrta. MC 5.29; Vasiṣṭha, p. 189; DS p. 137

Which months are good for mundan?

Any month of the Sun’s northern course, from mid-January to mid-July, except Caitra and an adhika month. The Dharmasindhu names Māgha, Phālguna, Vaiśākha and Jyeṣṭha as the good months. MC 5.29; DS p. 137

Why are there no dates in some months or years?

Mundan needs the Sun’s northern course, so no date falls from mid-July to mid-January. Within it, Caitra, an adhika month, Jupiter in Leo or Capricorn, and Jupiter or Venus set, infant or old bar whole stretches. A day still needs one of twelve stars, an allowed tithi and weekday, and a benefic lagna and navāṃśa with the 8th house empty and no malefic in a kendra, so in some years nothing is left. MC 5.26–30; 1.48

What if the child is the eldest?

For an eldest child, no auspicious rite in Jyeṣṭha (the Ratnamālā), and some add Mārgaśīrṣa. Jyeṣṭha dates are marked in the table. MC 5.33 commentary, p. 193; DS p. 137

Why is the date different in my city?

The windows are lagnas and navāṃśas, which rise at different clock times in each city, and the 8th house and the kendras follow the lagna. Sunrise also decides which civil day a window belongs to, and the setting and rising of Jupiter and Venus are seen from the city.

How the dates are found

Read the methodology
The day
Sunrise to the next sunrise at the city. Listed when the Sun is in its northern course, the month is not Caitra or adhika, Jupiter and Venus are clear, Jupiter is outside Leo and Capricorn, the star is one of twelve, the tithi is 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 11 or 13, and the weekday is Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, or Monday in the bright fortnight (MC 5.26–29).
The window
The lagna and its navāṃśa in a benefic’s sign, the 8th house empty but for Venus, and no waning Moon, Mars, Saturn or Sun in a kendra (MC 5.29–30). From it go Bhadrā, the bad yogas’ portions, the gaṇḍānta junctions, 16½ ghaṭikās either side of the Sun’s saṅkrānti (our reading), mahāpāta and the weekday-star yogas.
Jupiter and Venus
Set by the Sūrya-siddhānta’s time-degrees (Jupiter 11; Venus 8 retrograde, 10 direct), measured from the rising or setting at the city; infancy and old age by MC 5.27’s counts.
Flags
A dark Trayodaśī and a Jyeṣṭha date stay in the list, marked: the Dharmasindhu’s caution, and the eldest-child rule.
Not applied
The child’s birth star, birth month, 8th sign and tārā (MC 5.29–32; DS p. 137), and the weekdays allowed by varṇa.
