Calculation settings

One Moon, two zodiacs

The example’s Moon, 150° to 300° of the sky

Vedic signs are counted from the stars, Western signs from the equinox. In 2001 the two zodiacs were 23°52′ apart (the Lahiri ayanāṃśa), so the example’s Moon at 8°42′ Vrishchika is at 2°34′ Sagittarius in the Western zodiac. A Moon in roughly the last 24° of a Vedic sign falls in the next Western sign. Methodology: ayanāṃśa

What a Moon sign is

The sign the Moon occupied at birth, the janma rāśi. Transits and many other rules are counted from it. Phaladīpikā 26.1, p. 286

Nakshatra and pada

The sky is also cut into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′, each in four padas of 3°20′. The Moon’s nakshatra at birth is the janma nakshatra. Sūrya-siddhānta 2.64 · All 27 nakshatras

Without a birth time

The Moon moves about 13° a day, so on some dates it changes sign or nakshatra. Without a time it is taken at noon, and the answer says when the sign or nakshatra is uncertain.

Questions

Definitions and the rules they come from.

What is my moon sign?

The sign of the sidereal zodiac the Moon was in when you were born, the janma rāśi. For the example, born 19 January 2001 at 14:05 in New Delhi, it is Vrishchika (Scorpio); in the Western zodiac the same Moon is in Sagittarius. Phaladīpikā 26.1, p. 286

What is a rashi?

One of the twelve signs, each 30° of the zodiac, counted from Mesha. Each has a lord and a nature in the classical texts, set out on the rashi pages. BPHS 5.5–23

Why is my Vedic moon sign different from my Western one?

The Vedic zodiac is measured from the stars and the Western one from the March equinox. The two now differ by about 24°, the ayanāṃśa (23°52′ in 2001), so a Moon in roughly the last 24° of a Vedic sign is in the next sign of the Western zodiac.

Do I need my birth time?

It helps. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so on some dates it changes sign or nakshatra. Without a time the Moon is taken at noon, and the answer says when the sign or nakshatra is uncertain.

What are nakshatra and pada?

The zodiac is also divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′, each in four padas of 3°20′. The Moon’s nakshatra at birth is the janma nakshatra, and its lord starts the Vimśottarī dasha. Bṛhaj-jyotiḥsāra v. 411
