The rule

  • The Moon in one of the six buying stars: Revatī, Śatabhiṣā, Aśvinī, Svātī, Śravaṇa or Citrā. MC 2.16, commentary p. 63
  • A Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, never a Tuesday or Saturday: the riding days of the Vyavahāroccaya, quoted in the commentary. MC 2.18 commentary, p. 64
  • No riktā tithi, the 4th, 9th or 14th. MC 2.18 sets this rule for horses; applying it to vehicles is our reading. MC 2.18

Delivery or a first drive

For taking delivery or a first drive, the Vyavahāroccaya’s eleven riding stars, on the same weekdays: the six buying stars and Mṛgaśirā, Punarvasu, Hasta, Puṣya and Dhaniṣṭhā. MC 2.18 commentary, p. 64

Stars to avoid for buying

MC 2.16 bars for buying the selling stars of 2.17: the three Pūrvas, Viśākhā, Kṛttikā, Āśleṣā and Bharaṇī. The commentary counts every other star as middling for buying. MC 2.16⁠–⁠2.17, commentary p. 63

Whose muhurat counts

The buyer’s. When a seller must sell as soon as a buyer appears, only the buyer’s muhūrta is checked. MC 2.16 commentary, p. 63

What the times leave out

Windows under 5 minutes are dropped.

Months, Pitru Paksha and night

The texts list the acts barred in an adhika month, and buying is not one of them, so adhika months keep their dates. The texts read set no bar on buying during Pitṛ-pakṣa, and none at night. MC 1.46⁠–⁠47; DS p. 4

Popular practice: Many families avoid new purchases during Pitru Paksha. The texts read give no such rule, so those dates stay in the list. Pitru Paksha dates

When are the vehicle purchase dates in 2026?

In Delhi, 74 dates, from Sunday, 11 January to Sunday, 20 December: 6 in January, 4 in February, 6 in March, 6 in April, 7 in May, 8 in June, 7 in July, 8 in August, 5 in September, 6 in October, 4 in November, 7 in December. Is the delivery date different from the purchase date?

Can I buy a vehicle in Pitru Paksha or an adhika month?

The texts read give no rule against it: buying is not on the adhika lists, and no Pitṛ-pakṣa bar was found. Many families avoid new purchases during Pitru Paksha. The texts read give no such rule, so those dates stay in the list. MC 1.46⁠–⁠47; DS p. 4

Whose muhurat counts, the buyer’s or the seller’s?

Why is the date different in my city?

The star, the tithi and the barred stretches turn at the same moments everywhere, but sunrise and the day’s divisions come at the city’s own hours, so a window can start or end on another date, or vanish, in another city.
