Days that miss one rule

Delhi time

These days are not annaprashan dates here. Each fails only the rules named, with their sources, and its windows are shown as they would be without them.

These days pass every rule here except the weekday: Sunday, which some allow. DS p. 135

  • Sun 2 Jan Shatabhisha · Shukla Panchami 09:51 – 11:19
  • Sun 7 May Chitra · Shukla Trayodashi 06:04 – 06:06

This day passes every rule here except Mṛtyu yoga, the weekday’s star in the mṛtyu column. MC 1.30, p. 23

  • Wed 1 Mar Ashwini · Shukla PanchamiWednesday with Aśvinī 12:23 – 12:33

The rules

Your baby’s month

A boy in the 6th, 8th, 10th or 12th month, and the Dharmasindhu adds the end of the first year; a girl in the 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th. The time the family’s own gṛhya-sūtra names comes first, and then the setting of Jupiter and Venus is not considered. MC 5.17 and commentary, p. 179; DS p. 135

An adhika month and a set, infant or old Jupiter or Venus are avoided when another time is available: if the sixth month has the fault, the eighth is used. When no pure day is available, a family at the prescribed month may go ahead. DS pp. 4–5, 135

The birth star: some call it bad, while Nārada and Vasiṣṭha call it good for this rite, and the commentator calls it, and the 10th and 19th stars from it, more praiseworthy. The dates here do not test it, since it needs the child’s chart. MC 5.17–18 and commentary, pp. 179–180; DS p. 135

The rite

Viṣṇu, Śiva, the Moon, the Sun, the guardians of the directions, Earth, the directions and brāhmaṇas are worshipped. On the mother’s lap the child is fed pāyasa with curd, honey and ghee, from a gold or bronze vessel, by a hand holding gold, with mantras. Then tools, weapons, cloth and books are set before the child, and the text says that what it first touches, by that it will live. DS p. 135

Other years: Annaprashan muhurat 2026, Annaprashan muhurat 2027; all annaprashan dates.

Questions

From the Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi and the Dharmasindhu, with the page for each.

When are the annaprashan dates in 2028?

In Delhi: Monday, 10 January (Mṛgaśirā); Monday, 31 January (Uttara Bhādrapadā); Thursday, 3 February (Aśvinī); Friday, 31 March (Rohiṇī); Thursday, 27 April (Rohiṇī). The table gives each day’s forenoon lagna windows. MC 5.17–18; DS p. 135

In which month should annaprashan be done?

A boy in the 6th, 8th, 10th or 12th month, and the Dharmasindhu adds the end of the first year; a girl in the 5th, 7th, 9th or 11th. The time the family’s own gṛhya-sūtra names comes first, and then the setting of Jupiter and Venus is not considered. MC 5.17 and commentary, p. 179; DS p. 135

What time of day is best?

The forenoon, from sunrise to midday, in the bright fortnight. Each date here lists only forenoon windows. Nārada in MC 5.17 commentary, p. 179

Can it be on the birth star?

The texts differ. Some call the birth star bad; Nārada and Vasiṣṭha call it good for this rite, and the commentator calls it, and the 10th and 19th stars from it, more praiseworthy. MC 5.17–18 and commentary, pp. 179–180; DS p. 135

Why is the date different in my city?

The windows are forenoon lagnas, which rise at different clock times in each city, and the 10th house and the other placements follow the lagna. Sunrise and midday also differ, and the setting and rising of Jupiter and Venus are seen from the city.

How the dates are found

Read the methodology
The day
Listed when the fortnight is bright, the tithi is 2, 3, 5, 7, 10 or 13, the weekday is Monday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, the star is one of sixteen, the month is not adhika, and Jupiter and Venus are clear (MC 5.17; DS pp. 4–5, 135).
The window
The forenoon, sunrise to midday, where the lagna is not Aries, Scorpio or Pisces, the 10th house is empty, no malefic is in the 1st, 4th or 7th, the Moon is out of the 6th and 8th, and Guru’s three placements are absent (MC 5.17–18). Viṣṭi and the eight yogas go for their whole spans, and the other barred stretches as in the other lists.
Malefics
The Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rāhu and Ketu, so the Sun in the 1st after sunrise closes the window until it leaves the lagna sign (MC 4.1; the Bṛhaj-jātaka leaves the nodes out).
Jupiter and Venus
Set by the Sūrya-siddhānta’s time-degrees (Jupiter 11; Venus 8 retrograde, 10 direct); infancy and old age by MC 5.27’s counts.
An empty year
When no day passes, the page says so and lists the days that fail only at the window, with the tests that removed them.
Not applied
The baby’s month, the birth star and the 8th sign from the birth sign or lagna (MC 5.17–18; DS p. 135).
