When the fast and the shraddha fall apart

The fast takes the later day, joined to the next Pratipadā. The śrāddha takes the day whose afternoon the Amāvasyā touches, so when it covers the first afternoon and ends before the second, the śrāddha falls a day earlier. Nirṇaya-sindhu pp. 73, 81–87

Sunday, 4 July

Jyeshtha (amanta) / Ashadha (purnimanta), Amavasya

Amavasya from Sat 3 Jul, 12:06 to Sun 4 Jul, 08:32, Delhi time.

Śrāddha, Saturday, 3 July: the Amāvasyā covers all of Saturday’s aparāhṇa, the last third of the daytime, and none of Sunday’s. Nirṇaya-sindhu pp. 81, 87

Questions

Rules from the Nirṇaya-sindhu, with the page for each.

When are the Amavasyas in 2027?

In Delhi, 13 Amavasyas fall in 2027. Three times the śrāddha falls on a different day from the fast: 3 July, 29 September, 27 November. The table lists every date.

What is Amavasya?

The new moon: the thirtieth tithi, which ends the dark half (Krishna) of the lunar month. A tithi is the time the Moon takes to gain 12° on the Sun. In the amānta reckoning the Amāvasyā is the last day of the month. Surya Siddhanta 2.64, 2.66

Which day is the Amavasya fast?

The fast is kept on the later of the two days, the one joined to the next Pratipadā, and never on the day joined to Chaturdaśī. The Sāvitrī vrata is the exception and keeps the earlier day. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 73

When is the Amavasya shraddha?

On the day whose aparāhṇa, the last third of the daytime, the Amāvasyā touches. When it touches both afternoons, the day whose kutapa, the 8th of the day’s 15 muhūrtas, it covers. Hemādri makes the kutapa the first test for households without sacred fires, and Hārīta’s rule by Vedic branch decides equal coverage. Nirṇaya-sindhu pp. 81–87

What are Somvati and Bhauma Amavasya?

An Amāvasyā on a Monday (Somavatī) “gives fruit like the equinox”, and on a Tuesday (Bhauma) bathing in the Gaṅgā gives the fruit of a thousand cows. The weekday here is that of the fast day. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 73 (Śātātapa, Vyāsa)

Why is the date different in my city?

Each date is worked out for the city’s own sunrise and afternoon. The Amāvasyā begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but which sunrise and afternoon it reaches depends on the city, so cities far apart can keep different days.

How the days are found

Read the methodology
Fast day
The fast is on the later day, joined to the next Pratipadā, and never on the day joined to Chaturdaśī. The Sāvitrī vrata keeps the earlier day.
Śrāddha
The day whose aparāhṇa, the last third of the daytime, the Amāvasyā touches. When it touches both afternoons, or neither, the kutapa decides: the 8th of the day’s 15 muhūrtas.
Sunrise and sunset
At the centre of the Sun’s disc, with refraction, for the chosen city. Every date is that city’s own.
