Questions

Rules from the Nirṇaya-sindhu, with the page for each.

When is the next Somvati Amavasya?

In Delhi, on Monday, 9 November 2026. After that: Monday, 8 March 2027; Monday, 2 August 2027; Monday, 27 December 2027.

How often does it happen?

Whenever the Amāvasyā fast falls on a Monday: 7 times in 2026 to 2028 in Delhi, at uneven gaps.

Why is a Monday Amavasya special?

The Nirṇaya-sindhu quotes Śātātapa: an Amāvasyā on a Monday “gives fruit like the equinox”. Quoting Vyāsa, a bath taken in silence on such a day gives the fruit of a thousand cows. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 73

Why is the date different in my city?

Each date is worked out for the city’s own sunrise and afternoon. The Amāvasyā begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but which sunrise and afternoon it reaches depends on the city, so cities far apart can keep different days.

How the days are found

Read the methodology
Fast day
The fast is on the later day, joined to the next Pratipadā, and never on the day joined to Chaturdaśī. The Sāvitrī vrata keeps the earlier day.
Śrāddha
The day whose aparāhṇa, the last third of the daytime, the Amāvasyā touches. When it touches both afternoons, or neither, the kutapa decides: the 8th of the day’s 15 muhūrtas.
Sunrise and sunset
At the centre of the Sun’s disc, with refraction, for the chosen city. Every date is that city’s own.
