When the Chaturthi meets both moonrises, or neither

At both moonrises, some take the earlier day, joined with Tṛtīyā, and others the later day, which covers midday; these pages keep the earlier day and note the later. At neither, the later day. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 47

Wednesday, 3 June

Adhika Jyeshtha (amanta) / Ashadha (purnimanta), Krishna Chaturthi

Chaturthi from Wed 3 Jun, 21:21 to Thu 4 Jun, 23:30, Delhi time.

Kept on Wednesday, 3 June: the Chaturthī is current at the moonrise on both Wednesday and Thursday, so some keep the earlier day, Wednesday, joined with Tṛtīyā, and others the later, Thursday, 4 June. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 47

Questions

Rules from the Nirṇaya-sindhu and the Vīramitrodaya, with the page for each.

When are the Sankashti Chaturthis in 2026?

In Delhi, 13 Sankashti Chaturthis fall in 2026. 3 fall on a Tuesday (popularly Aṅgārakī): 6 January, 5 May, 29 September. The table lists every date with its moonrise.

What is Sankashti Chaturthi?

A vow to Gaṇeśa on the Chaturthī, the fourth tithi, of the dark half of the lunar month, kept on the day the Chaturthī is current at moonrise. The dark half is common practice; the texts read do not state the fortnight. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 47; Vīramitrodaya p. 38

What time is moonrise on Sankashti in my city?

Each city has its own moonrise; choose yours above. Moonrise here is the visible rise, the Moon’s upper limb with refraction; the texts do not say, so this is our convention.

Why does the date differ between cities?

Each date is worked out for the city’s own moonrise. The Chaturthī begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but whether it is current at a city’s moonrise depends on the city, so cities far apart can keep different days.

What is Angaraki Sankashti?

A Saṅkaṣṭī Caturthī that falls on a Tuesday. Śātātapa says a Caturthī on a Tuesday “gives fruit like the equinox”. The name Aṅgārakī is popular; the texts read do not use it. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 73

The fortnight
