How the day is chosen

Popular practice; no text read gives the day.

Our rule: Rang Panchami is the day whose sunrise falls in the dark Pañcamī after Holī. When no sunrise falls in it, it is the day on which the Pañcamī falls; when two sunrises do, it is the first of them.

In Delhi the Pañcamī runs from Tue 14 Mar, 18:23 to Wed 15 Mar, 16:52, so it holds only Wednesday’s sunrise, and Rang Panchami is kept on Wednesday.

What the texts and old descriptions say

The Dharmasindhu gives Holī’s colour festival on the dark Dvitīyā and adds that ordinary people now keep it up to the dark Pañcamī. It gives the Pañcamī no name and no rule. Dharmasindhu p. 95

Two descriptions from before 1950 name the day. An Indian Ephemeris (1922) gives the dark Pañcamī of Phālguna as Raṅgapañcamī, “when colours are thrown about”. The Poona Gazetteer (1885) says the Kunbis’ Holī “ends on the fifth, which is known as Rang-panchmi or Colour-fifth”. An Indian Ephemeris pp. 65–66; Poona Gazetteer p. 293

Popular practice: the colours, the Gair procession in Indore and the processions in other towns.

Questions

By our stated rule; popular practice throughout, with the Dharmasindhu and two old descriptions as context.

When is Rang Panchami 2028?

In Delhi, Rang Panchami 2028 falls on Wednesday, 15 March 2028: the dark Pañcamī runs from Tue 14 Mar, 18:23 to Wed 15 Mar, 16:52, so it holds only Wednesday’s sunrise, and Rang Panchami is kept on Wednesday. In Toronto, it is Tuesday, 14 March.

How is the day chosen?

By our rule, which is popular practice. Rang Panchami is the day whose sunrise falls in the dark Pañcamī after Holī. When no sunrise falls in it, it is the day on which the Pañcamī falls; when two sunrises do, it is the first of them. In 2029 in Delhi, the Pañcamī runs from Sun 4 Mar, 08:28 to Mon 5 Mar, 05:40, so it holds neither Sunday’s sunrise nor Monday’s, and Rang Panchami is kept on Sunday, the day on which it falls.

Is Rang Panchami part of Holi?

The Dharmasindhu gives Holī’s colour festival on the dark Dvitīyā and says that ordinary people now keep it up to the dark Pañcamī, without naming that day or giving it a rule. An Indian Ephemeris (1922) and the Poona Gazetteer (1885) describe the dark Pañcamī as the day “when colours are thrown about” and as the end of the Holī. Dharmasindhu p. 95

Why can the date differ by city?

The Pañcamī begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but sunrise comes at a different hour in each city, so the sunrise that falls in it can change with the place. Delhi, Indore, Pune, Ulhasnagar and Jaipur keep the same day in every year from 2005 to 2035.

Basis
Popular practice; no text read gives the day. The rule is ours, stated in full.
The day
The dark Pañcamī after Holī: Phālguna kṛṣṇa in amānta reckoning, Caitra kṛṣṇa in pūrṇimānta. The day whose sunrise falls in it; when none does, the day on which it falls; when two do, the first.
One ghaṭikā
When moving either end of the Pañcamī by one ghaṭikā (24 minutes) would change the day, the other day is shown too. No year from 2027 to 2035 has such a case.
