Navratri in Delhi

Thursday, 30 September

Navratri is in 347 days. In Delhi, the Pratipadā touches no sunrise, so Navratri begins on its only day, Thursday, joined with Amāvasyā.

Ghatasthapana08:06 – 10:14
PratipadāThu 08:06 – Fri 05:35

Dharmasindhu p. 65

How the day is chosen

The kalaśa is set up on the Āśvina śukla Pratipadā current at sunrise, best when it lasts three muhūrtas after it, never on the one joined with Amāvasyā, unless the Pratipadā touches no sunrise or lasts under a muhūrta. The window is the first ten ghaṭikās (four hours) after sunrise while the Pratipadā runs, or the Abhijit muhūrta when that fails. The kalaśa is never set up in the afternoon or at night. Dharmasindhu p. 65

Questions

From the Dharmasindhu p. 65, with the page for each.

When does Navratri 2027 start?

In Delhi, on Thursday, 30 September 2027, with Ghatasthapana from 08:06 to 10:14. In Sydney and Singapore, it is Friday, 1 October. Dharmasindhu p. 65

What time is Ghatasthapana?

In the first ten ghaṭikās (four hours) after sunrise while the Pratipadā runs, failing that at the Abhijit muhūrta, never in the afternoon or at night. The Pratipadā’s first sixteen nāḍīs, Citrā and Vaidhṛti are avoided where the time allows, never at the cost of the forenoon. Dharmasindhu pp. 65–66

When is Durga Ashtami 2027?

In Delhi, on Thursday, 7 October 2027: the Aṣṭamī lasts under a ghaṭikā after Friday’s sunrise, so it is kept on the earlier day, Thursday. Nirṇaya-sindhu pp. 262–264; Dharmasindhu p. 69

When is Maha Navami 2027?

Which days are Chaitra and Sharad Navratri?

Sharad Navratri begins on the Āśvina śukla Pratipadā and ends with Vijayadashami on the Daśamī. Chaitra Navratri, in the spring, begins on the Caitra śukla Pratipadā by the same first-day rule and ends on the Navamī, the day of Rāma-navamī or the one before. This page gives both, day by day. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 113; Dharmasindhu pp. 31, 34

Why is the date different in the US or UK?

Navratri’s first day is decided by the Pratipadā at sunrise at the city. The tithi begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but sunrise and sunset come at different hours, so a city far to the west or east can keep another day. Dharmasindhu p. 65
