Moonrise is rounded to the minute. The arghya is given after it; the texts give no fixed pūjā muhurat. Vratarāja f. 81

Why the date differs In Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and 60 more cities, the Caturthī is current at Saturday’s moonrise and not at Friday’s, so Karwa Chauth is on Saturday. In New York City, Edison, Chicago and 9 more cities, the Caturthī is current at Friday’s moonrise and not at Saturday’s, so Karwa Chauth is on Friday. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 293; Dharmasindhu pp. 9, 76

How the day is chosen

Karwa Chauth is the Karaka-caturthī: the dark Caturthī current at moonrise. When it is current at both moonrises, the earlier day, joined with the Tṛtīyā, because the worship is set at moonrise; at neither, the later day. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 293; Dharmasindhu pp. 9, 76

Friday night or Saturday night in Delhi

Delhi time

In Delhi, the Caturthī runs from Sat 03:35 to Sun 04:51: it is current at Saturday’s moonrise and not at Friday’s, so Karwa Chauth is on Saturday. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 293

The vrata

  • Women keep it, for marital good fortune, sons and lasting prosperity. Vratarāja f. 81
  • In the evening, at nightfall, Gaurī, Śiva, Gaṇapati and Ṣaṇmukha are worshipped below a drawn banyan tree with the sixteen offerings. Vratarāja ff. 81, 82
  • Ten pots (karaka) with cooked food and rice are given to brāhmaṇas, and pots are exchanged with married women. Vratarāja ff. 81, 82
  • After the Moon rises, the arghya is given to it. Vratarāja f. 81
  • The fast lasts until that arghya: our reading of the story the Vratarāja tells, in which eating at a false moonrise is the fault. Vratarāja ff. 81–82
  • Sargī, the meal before dawn, and the sieve are popular customs; the texts read do not mention them.

Questions

From the Nirṇaya-sindhu, p. 293, the Dharmasindhu, pp. 9 and 76, and the Vratarāja, ff. 81–82.

When is Karwa Chauth 2028?

In Delhi, on Saturday, 7 October 2028, with moonrise at 20:01. In New York City, Edison, Chicago and 9 more cities, it is Friday, 6 October. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 293

What time is moonrise on Karwa Chauth in my city?

The table above gives the moonrise on Karwa Chauth for every listed city, in its own time. The arghya is given to the Moon after it rises, and that ends the fast. Vratarāja ff. 81–82

Why is the moonrise time different in each city?

The Moon rises at a different moment at each place, earlier in the east and later in the west, and each city’s clock is its own. The Caturthī is one span everywhere, so a city where it is not current at that evening’s moonrise can keep another day. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 293

Is Karva Chauth the same festival?

Yes. Karwa and Karva are two spellings of karvā, the pot (karaka) given in the rite. The texts call the day Karaka-caturthī. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 293

How the day is found

Read the methodology
The day
The dark Caturthī ending amānta Āśvina (pūrṇimānta Kārtika), current at moonrise. When it is current at both moonrises, the earlier day is kept, and at neither, the later day. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 293; Dharmasindhu pp. 9, 76.
Moonrise
The Moon’s upper limb at the horizon, with refraction, as for Saṅkaṣṭī Caturthī, rounded to the nearest minute.
The vrata
The pūjā at nightfall and the arghya after moonrise (Vratarāja ff. 81, 82). The fast until that arghya is our reading of the kathā (ff. 81–82).
Not in the texts
A fixed pūjā muhurat, the pre-dawn meal (sargī) and the sieve: popular customs the texts read do not mention.
