How the day is chosen

Each dark Aṣṭamī is decided as the Bhairava-jayantī is: the Aṣṭamī covering midday is kept, and when it covers midday on both days, the earlier day. When it holds only the earlier day’s pradoṣa and only the later day’s midday, the Dharmasindhu takes the pradoṣa day, following the conduct of many learned people. Dharmasindhu p. 10

Kalashtami (monthly): the Dharmasindhu records that some fast on every dark Aṣṭamī for Kālabhairava. Dharmasindhu p. 10

Questions

From the Dharmasindhu, which gives the monthly fast and its rule.

When is Kalashtami in 2028?

In Delhi, 12 times: Tuesday, 18 January; Thursday, 17 February; Friday, 17 March; Sunday, 16 April; Tuesday, 16 May; Thursday, 15 June; Friday, 14 July; Sunday, 13 August; Monday, 11 September; Wednesday, 11 October; Thursday, 9 November; Saturday, 9 December. Each month’s section gives the day, the times and why. Dharmasindhu p. 10

What is Kalashtami?

The dark Aṣṭamī of each month, kept by some with a fast for Kālabhairava, as the Dharmasindhu records. Each is decided as the annual Bhairava-jayantī is, by the Aṣṭamī at midday. Dharmasindhu p. 10

Is every Kalashtami Kaal Bhairav Jayanti?

No. Kaal Bhairav Jayanti is one of them: the dark Aṣṭamī that ends amānta Kārtika (Mārgaśīrṣa in the pūrṇimānta reckoning), which the Dharmasindhu calls the Bhairava-jayantī. The other dark Aṣṭamīs are the monthly Kalashtami. Dharmasindhu p. 10

How is the day chosen?

As for the Bhairava-jayantī: the Aṣṭamī covering midday is kept, and when it covers midday on both days, the earlier day. When it holds only the earlier day’s pradoṣa and only the later day’s midday, the Dharmasindhu takes the pradoṣa day, and the midday day is shown beside it. Dharmasindhu p. 10

Why can the date differ by city?

The Aṣṭamī begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but midday and sunset come at different hours in each city, so a city far to the west or east can keep another day. Dharmasindhu p. 10

How the day is found

The day
Each kṛṣṇa Aṣṭamī covering midday; on both days, the earlier; holding only the earlier day’s pradoṣa and the later day’s midday, the pradoṣa day (Dharmasindhu pp. 10, 84). Neither midday: the day whose sunrise it holds (our reading).
Midday and pradoṣa
Midday is the third fifth of the daytime; pradoṣa is the three muhūrtas after sunset.
