Janmashtami in Delhi

Wednesday, 25 August

Janmashtami is in 311 days. In Delhi, the Aṣṭamī holds Tuesday night’s midnight and meets Rohiṇī on Wednesday, so Janmashtami is one observance, on the Rohiṇī day, Wednesday (Mādhava).

How the day is chosen

Midnight decides: the fast is kept on the day whose midnight the Aṣṭamī holds. In a split year, when the Aṣṭamī holds the first midnight and meets Rohiṇī on the second day, Mādhava keeps one observance, on the Rohiṇī day; the Nirṇaya-sindhu keeps two fasts, the first being its Janmāṣṭamī. Nirṇaya-sindhu pp. 189–192

Questions

From the Nirṇaya-sindhu pp. 189–192, with the page for each.

When is Janmashtami 2027?

In Delhi, on Wednesday, 25 August 2027; the Nirṇaya-sindhu keeps its fast on Tuesday, 24 August. Every city on this page keeps the same day. Dharmasindhu pp. 50–51

Why are there two Janmashtami dates?

In some years the Aṣṭamī holds one midnight and Rohiṇī joins it the next day. Mādhava then keeps one observance, on the Rohiṇī day, while the Nirṇaya-sindhu keeps two fasts. Vaiṣṇava calendars follow the Aṣṭamī at sunrise, a view the Nirṇaya-sindhu sets aside. This page shows each date with its source. Nirṇaya-sindhu pp. 189–192; Dharmasindhu pp. 50–51

What is Jayanti?

Jayantī is the Aṣṭamī joined with Rohiṇī. The Nirṇaya-sindhu holds both vratas due, though people keep only Janmāṣṭamī. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 187

Why is the date different in the US or UK?

Janmashtami is decided by the Aṣṭamī at midnight and Rohiṇī at the city. The tithi begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but sunrise and sunset come at different hours, so a city far to the west or east can keep another day. Nirṇaya-sindhu pp. 189–190
