Why the date differs In Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, Jaipur, Lucknow and Dubai, Bhadrā runs past midnight, so Holikā is lit at Sunday’s pradoṣa in Bhadrā, away from its face. In London, Bhadrā ends before midnight, so Holikā is lit on Sunday night once it ends. In New York City and Toronto, the Pūrṇimā holds Sunday’s pradoṣa, free of Bhadrā, so Holikā is lit then. In Sydney, the Pūrṇimā holds Monday’s pradoṣa, while Bhadrā falls on Sunday’s, so Holika Dahan is on Monday. In Singapore, Sunday’s pradoṣa is in Bhadrā, and the Pūrṇimā lasts three and a half yāmas into Monday with the Pratipadā growing, so Holika Dahan is at Monday’s pradoṣa (Bhaviṣya). Why is Holika not lit in Bhadra’s face?

When Bhadrā runs past midnight, the fire is lit at pradoṣa, away from the face. Dharmasindhu pp. 94–95; Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi 1.44

Why is the date different in the US or UK?

Holika Dahan is decided by the Pūrṇimā at pradoṣa and Bhadrā at the city. The tithi begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but sunrise and sunset come at different hours, so a city far to the west or east can keep another day. Dharmasindhu p. 94
