The Dharmasindhu has vermilion and scented powders sprinkled on the dark Dvitīyā, and says that people in its day kept the festival up to the dark Pañcamī. No text read puts the colours on the morning after the fire. Dharmasindhu p. 95
Why is Holika not lit in Bhadra’s face?
Bhadrā, the Viṣṭi karaṇa, is avoided for Holikā. Its face, the first five ghaṭikās of its fourth quarter, is never used; its tail, the last three of the third, is auspicious. When Bhadrā runs past midnight, the fire is lit at pradoṣa, away from the face. Dharmasindhu pp. 94–95; Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi 1.44
Why is the date different in the US or UK?
Holika Dahan is decided by the Pūrṇimā at pradoṣa and Bhadrā at the city. The tithi begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but sunrise and sunset come at different hours, so a city far to the west or east can keep another day. Dharmasindhu p. 94
How the day is found
Read the methodology- The night
- The Phālguna Pūrṇimā at pradoṣa, free of Bhadrā where the rules allow. Dharmasindhu p. 94; Nirṇaya-sindhu pp. 342–344.
- Bhadrā
- The Viṣṭi karaṇa. Its tail, the last 3 ghaṭikās of the tithi’s third quarter, is auspicious; its face, the first 5 of the fourth, is never used (DS pp. 94–95, MC 1.44).
- Nirṇaya-sindhu
- Stricter: it lights only after Bhadrā ends; its day is noted where it differs.
- Sunset
