Questions
By our stated rule; popular practice throughout, with the saṅkrānti’s textual basis cited.
When is Vishwakarma Puja 2029?
In Kolkata, on Monday, 17 September 2029, the day of the Kanyā saṅkrānti’s puṇyakāla, by our stated rule. The Sun enters Kanyā at Mon 17 Sep, 02:30, and the puṇyakāla is 05:24 – 11:30. In London, New York City and Toronto, it is Sunday, 16 September. Popular practice; no text read gives the worship. DS p. 2; NS p. 5
Why is Vishwakarma Puja around 17 September every year?
It follows the Sun, not the Moon. The day is the Kanyā saṅkrānti, when the Sun enters sidereal Kanyā, and that falls around 16 to 18 September each year, so the date barely moves.
Is Vishwakarma Puja in the classical texts?
Only its date’s basis is: the Kanyā saṅkrānti and its puṇyakāla. The Nirṇaya-sindhu, the Dharmasindhu and the Vratarāja prescribe no worship of Viśvakarman on this day, and none of tools and machines. DS p. 2; NS p. 5
Why is the date different in the US or UK?
The Sun enters Kanyā at the same moment everywhere, but that moment falls by day in some cities and by night in others. A night ingress moves the puṇyakāla to the afternoon before or the morning after, so a city far to the west or east can keep another day. DS p. 2; NS p. 5
