How the day is chosen

Each śukla Caturthī is kept by the rule this site follows for Ganesh Chaturthi: the later day when the Caturthī reaches its midday, and otherwise the earlier day, joined with the Tṛtīyā. Midday is the third fifth of the daytime. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 47 (Bṛhaspati)

Popularly Vinayaka Chaturthi: no text read prescribes the vow every month, so the monthly keeping is popular practice. The day rule is cited.

Where the Dharmasindhu’s stricter reading (p. 9) gives the earlier day, the month shows it as a note; it never moves the day.

Questions

The day rule from the Nirṇaya-sindhu, with the Dharmasindhu’s stricter reading as a note.

When is Vinayaka Chaturthi in 2027?

In Delhi, 13 times: Tuesday, 12 January; Wednesday, 10 February; Friday, 12 March; Saturday, 10 April; Sunday, 9 May; Tuesday, 8 June; Wednesday, 7 July; Thursday, 5 August; Saturday, 4 September; Sunday, 3 October; Tuesday, 2 November; Thursday, 2 December; Friday, 31 December. Each month’s section gives the day, the times and why. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 47 (Bṛhaspati)

What is Vinayaka Chaturthi?

The śukla Caturthī of each month, kept for Gaṇeśa. The texts read give the Vināyaka-vrata on the Caitra, Bhādrapada and Māgha śukla Caturthīs, the Bhādrapada one being Ganesh Chaturthi; none prescribes it every month, so the monthly keeping is popular practice. Dharmasindhu pp. 32, 89

How is it different from Sankashti Chaturthi?

Vinayaka Chaturthi is the Caturthī of the bright fortnight, decided by midday. Sankashti Chaturthi is the Caturthī of the dark fortnight, kept by moonrise. Sankashti Chaturthi dates

How is the day chosen?

By midday, as for Ganesh Chaturthi: the later day is kept when the Caturthī reaches its midday, and otherwise the earlier day, joined with the Tṛtīyā. The Dharmasindhu’s stricter reading, which takes the later day only when the Caturthī fills its whole midday, is shown as a note where it gives the earlier day. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 47 (Bṛhaspati)

Why can the date differ by city?

The Caturthī begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but midday comes at a different hour in each city. Whether it reaches the later day’s midday can change with the place, so a city far to the west or east can keep another day. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 47 (Bṛhaspati)

How the day is found

Read the methodology
The day
Each śukla Caturthī: the later day when it reaches that day’s midday, otherwise the earlier day, joined with the Tṛtīyā (Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 47). The Bhādrapada row is always Ganesh Chaturthi’s day.
The stricter reading
The Dharmasindhu takes the later day only when the Caturthī fills its whole midday (p. 9); where that gives the earlier day it is a note.
Midday
The third fifth of the daytime (Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 28). The pūjā time is that day’s midday while the Caturthī runs.
Popular practice
No text read prescribes the vow every month; the monthly keeping is labelled popular practice.
