Questions

Positions are computed with the Swiss Ephemeris.

When does Sun enter Capricorn in 2028?

On 15 January 2028 at 03:24 IST, by the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri).

Is the Sun ever retrograde?

No. Seen from the Earth, the Sun always moves forward through the zodiac, about one degree a day.

What is Surya gochar?

Surya gochar is the transit of the Sun through the signs: Surya is its Hindi name, and gochar means its movement through the zodiac.

Why do Vedic and Western transit dates differ?

The Vedic zodiac used here is sidereal, measured against the stars with the Lahiri ayanamsa; the Western zodiac is tropical, measured from the equinox. The two are about 24° apart, so the Sun reaches each Vedic sign about 24 days after the Western one.

Which time zone are the times in?

India Standard Time (IST, UTC+5:30) by default. Choose another zone at the top of the page and every time on it changes.

How the positions are found

Read the methodology
Positions
Geocentric, in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, from the Swiss Ephemeris (NASA JPL’s DE441).
Rahu and Ketu
Sign changes give the mean node first, as the Surya Siddhanta does (1.33), with the true node beside it.
Western positions
The tropical zodiac runs about 24° ahead of the sidereal one, so Western sign dates fall earlier.
