Three Teejs

Teej 2028 in Delhi

24 July to 22 August

Hariyali Teej is in 645 days.

How the days are chosen

Divodāsa’s verse names three women’s Tṛtīyās, each kept joined with the Caturthī: the Madhuśrāvaṇikā on the bright Tṛtīyā of Śrāvaṇa, the Kajjalī on the dark Tṛtīyā of Bhādrapada and the Haritālikā on its bright Tṛtīyā. NS p. 197, quoting Divodāsa

Each is kept on the last day whose sunrise has the Tṛtīyā, joined with the Caturthī, even when a muhūrta or less of the Tṛtīyā remains after that sunrise. When no sunrise has the Tṛtīyā, it is kept on the day it runs, joined with the Dvitīyā. NS p. 197; DS p. 55

Hariyali Teej 2028

The Madhuśrāvaṇikā

The bright Tṛtīyā of Śrāvaṇa: in the texts, the Madhuśrāvaṇikā, the first of the three. NS p. 197

The Vratarāja knows it as the Madhusravā, kept in Gujarat, and gives no rite for it, since it was not kept in its author’s region. VR f. 45

Popularly, Hariyali Teej. The name and the day’s present customs are not in the texts read.

24Jul Monday, 24 July in Delhi Tṛtīyā Mon 24 Jul, 02:10 to 22:53

In Delhi, the Tṛtīyā holds sunrise on Monday, 24 July and lasts 18.9 muhūrtas after it, so it is kept that day, joined with the Caturthī.

Kajari Teej 2028

The Kajjalī

The dark Tṛtīyā of Bhādrapada: in the texts, the Kajjalī, the second of the three. NS p. 197

The Nirṇaya-sindhu counts its months pūrṇimānta, so the Kajjalī is the dark Tṛtīyā after the Śrāvaṇa Pūrṇimā, where Kajari Teej falls today. This reading of the month is ours.

8Aug Tuesday, 8 August in Delhi Tṛtīyā Mon 7 Aug, 18:04 to Tue 8 Aug, 20:30

In Delhi, the Tṛtīyā holds sunrise on Tuesday, 8 August and lasts 16.5 muhūrtas after it, so it is kept that day, joined with the Caturthī.

22Aug Tuesday, 22 August in Delhi Tṛtīyā Tue 22 Aug, 08:44 to Wed 23 Aug, 05:10

In Delhi, the Tṛtīyā holds no sunrise: it begins after sunrise on Tuesday, 22 August and ends before the next, so it is kept that day, joined with the Dvitīyā.

The Vratarāja’s rite begins with a morning bath with a paste of sesame and āmalaka and a resolve to worship Umā-Maheśvara, with Gaṇapati worshipped first. In a pavilion of plantain stems and silk, a sand liṅga is set up with Pārvatī and worshipped with flowers, incense, food and fruit. A night vigil is kept, and the story is heard with the husband. VR ff. 48, 51

The name: Pārvatī was carried off (haritā) by her companions (ali). VR f. 51

Questions

From the Nirṇaya-sindhu, the Dharmasindhu and the Vratarāja, with the page for each.

When is Hartalika Teej 2028?

In Delhi, on Tuesday, 22 August 2028: the bright Tṛtīyā of Bhādrapada, the Haritālikā of the texts. The Tṛtīyā runs from Tue 22 Aug, 08:44 to Wed 23 Aug, 05:10. In Sydney and Singapore, it is Wednesday, 23 August. NS p. 197; DS p. 55

When is Hariyali Teej 2028?

In Delhi, on Monday, 24 July 2028: the bright Tṛtīyā of Śrāvaṇa, the Madhuśrāvaṇikā of the texts. The Tṛtīyā runs from Mon 24 Jul, 02:10 to 22:53. NS p. 197; DS p. 55

What is Kajari Teej?

The Kajjalī of Divodāsa’s verse: the dark Tṛtīyā of Bhādrapada, the second of three women’s Tṛtīyās kept joined with the Caturthī. Reading the Nirṇaya-sindhu’s months pūrṇimānta, it is the dark Tṛtīyā after the Śrāvaṇa Pūrṇimā, where Kajari Teej falls today; that reading of the month is ours. In 2028, in Delhi, it is on Tuesday, 8 August. NS p. 197, quoting Divodāsa

Why are there three Teejs?

One verse, Divodāsa’s in the Nirṇaya-sindhu, names three women’s Tṛtīyās and gives them one rule: each is kept joined with the Caturthī. The Madhuśrāvaṇikā (Hariyali Teej) falls on the bright Tṛtīyā of Śrāvaṇa, the Kajjalī (Kajari Teej) on the dark Tṛtīyā of Bhādrapada and the Haritālikā (Hartalika Teej) on the bright Tṛtīyā of Bhādrapada. NS p. 197, quoting Divodāsa

Why is the date different in the US or UK?

The Tṛtīyā begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but sunrise comes at different hours, so the last sunrise that has it can fall on a different day in another city, and a Tṛtīyā that misses every sunrise in one city can hold one in another. DS p. 55
