Questions

From the Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi and its commentary, with the page for each.

When does Holashtak 2028 start and end?

In Delhi, it runs from Saturday, 4 March 2028, when the Aṣṭamī begins at 02:44, to Saturday, 11 March 2028, when the Pūrṇimā ends at 06:36. Some cities run a day apart; the list below gives each. Śīghrabodha, in the commentary on Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi 1.40

Does Holashtak apply everywhere?

No. On the banks of the Beas (Vipāśā), the Ravi (Irāvatī) and the Sutlej (Śutudrī), and at Pushkar (Tripuṣkara), the eight days before Holikā are not good for marriage and other auspicious acts. The commentary adds, quoting the Śīghrabodha, that elsewhere the days are auspicious. Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi 1.40

Are weddings avoided during Holashtak?

Only in those regions: the Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi avoids the eight days for marriage and other auspicious acts on the banks of the Beas, Ravi and Sutlej and at Pushkar. Elsewhere the days are auspicious, by the Śīghrabodha quoted in its commentary. The site’s muhurat finder does not apply it. Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi 1.40

Why eight days?

The eight days run from the Aṣṭamī of Phālguna’s bright half to the Pūrṇimā. Holāṣṭaka means these eight days before Holikā; the Pūrṇimā is the night of Holika Dahan. Śīghrabodha, in the commentary on Muhūrta-cintāmaṇi 1.40
