How the day is chosen

Gangaur is the popular name; the texts call the day the Gaurī-tṛtīyā, Gaurī’s swing festival. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 114; Vratarāja f. 38

The day is the Caitra śukla Tṛtīyā. A Tṛtīyā joined to even a trace of the Dvitīyā is barred, so Gangaur is kept on the day whose sunrise the Tṛtīyā holds, even by a trace. When it holds two sunrises, the later day is kept, joined with the Caturthī; when it holds none, the day on which it begins, joined with the Dvitīyā. Dharmasindhu p. 9

In Delhi the Tṛtīyā runs from Tue 28 Mar, 13:03 to Wed 29 Mar, 13:58, so it holds only Wednesday’s sunrise, and Gangaur is kept on Wednesday.

The Nirṇaya-sindhu, after Mādhava, asks for at least a muhūrta of the Tṛtīyā on the later day; the Dharmasindhu takes even a trace, and this page follows it. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 114

The worship

  • Gaurī is worshipped with Śiva, with kuṅkuma, aguru, camphor, gems, cloth, garlands, incense and lamps, and above all damanaka, and then swung in a swing to please Śiva and Umā. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 114 (Devī-purāṇa)
  • On the Dvitīyā, the day before, Gaurī and Śiva are worshipped with damanaka. Dharmasindhu p. 31
  • A rite kept by women for good fortune, with a night vigil. Vratarāja f. 38
  • The Gaurī-vrata runs through Caitra, and the swing vow begun on this day is kept for a month. Dharmasindhu pp. 31–32

Popular practice: the eighteen days of worship from the day after Holi, the clay images of Isar and Gauri, the processions in Jaipur and Udaipur, the immersion, the ghevar and the songs.

Questions

From the Nirṇaya-sindhu, the Dharmasindhu and the Vratarāja, with the page for each.

When is Gangaur 2028?

In Delhi, Gangaur 2028 falls on Wednesday, 29 March 2028, the Gaurī-tṛtīyā: the Tṛtīyā runs from Tue 28 Mar, 13:03 to Wed 29 Mar, 13:58, so it holds only Wednesday’s sunrise, and Gangaur is kept on Wednesday. In New York City and Toronto, it is Tuesday, 28 March. Dharmasindhu p. 9

What do the texts say about the day?

On the Caitra śukla Tṛtīyā, Gaurī is worshipped with Śiva and swung in a swing, with damanaka above all; the day before, both are worshipped with damanaka. The Vratarāja gives it as a rite kept by women for good fortune, with a night vigil. Gangaur is the popular name. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 114; Dharmasindhu pp. 31–32; Vratarāja f. 38

How is the day chosen?

By the Dharmasindhu’s rule for the Gaurī-vrata: a Tṛtīyā joined to even a trace of the Dvitīyā is barred, so the day kept is the last whose sunrise the Tṛtīyā holds. When it holds no sunrise, the day on which it begins is kept, joined with the Dvitīyā. That happened in 2025 in Delhi: the Tṛtīyā began after sunrise on Monday, 31 March and ended before the next sunrise, so Gangaur fell on that Monday. Dharmasindhu p. 9

Why can the date differ by city?

The Tṛtīyā begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but sunrise comes at a different hour in each city. Which sunrises the Tṛtīyā holds can change with the place, so a city far to the west or east can keep another day. Jaipur and Delhi keep the same day. Dharmasindhu p. 9

How the day is found

Read the methodology
The day
The Caitra śukla Tṛtīyā (amānta Caitra). The day whose sunrise the Tṛtīyā holds, even by a trace; two such days, the later; none, the day it begins (Dharmasindhu p. 9).
The other reading
The Nirṇaya-sindhu asks for a muhūrta of the Tṛtīyā on the later day (p. 114). It is noted and does not change the day here.
