Questions
From the Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 144; Dharmasindhu p. 38, with the page for each.
When is Ganga Dussehra 2027?
In Delhi, on Sunday, 13 June 2027, with the Daśamī in the forenoon, 05:23 – 12:21, and 7 of the ten yogas. Every city on this page keeps the same day. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 144; Dharmasindhu p. 38
What are the ten yogas?
Jyeṣṭha, the bright fortnight, the Daśamī, Wednesday, Hasta, Vyatīpāta, the Gara karaṇa, Ānanda, the Moon in Kanyā and the Sun in Vṛṣa. The more of them the day holds, the greater the fruit; the Dharmasindhu reads Ānanda as Wednesday meeting Hasta. In Delhi in 2027, the day holds 7: the month of Jyeṣṭha, the bright fortnight, the Daśamī, Hasta, Vyatīpāta yoga, the Moon in Kanyā and the Sun in Vṛṣa. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 144; Dharmasindhu p. 38
Why is it called Dashahara?
The Brāhma says the Jyeṣṭha śukla Daśamī joined with Hasta takes away ten sins, and so it is called Daśaharā, the remover of ten. Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 143 (the Brāhma, via Hemādri)
Why is the date different in the US or UK?
Ganga Dussehra is decided by the Daśamī in the forenoon at the city. The tithi begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but sunrise and sunset come at different hours, so a city far to the west or east can keep another day. Dharmasindhu p. 38
How the day is found
Read the methodology- The day
- The Jyeṣṭha śukla Daśamī in the forenoon. When it is in both forenoons, the day with more of the ten yogas is kept (NS p. 144; DS p. 38). A tie goes to the day with Vyatīpāta, then to the day with the Daśamī at sunrise: our reading.
- The yogas
- Counted where they meet the Daśamī in the forenoon: our reading of “in the forenoon”.
- Forenoon
- Sunrise to midday, the first half of the day, by the Dharmasindhu’s own definition (p. 36).
- Sunrise and sunset
- At the centre of the Sun’s disc, with refraction, for the chosen city. Every date is that city’s own.
