Questions
From the Dharmasindhu p. 58; Nirṇaya-sindhu pp. 210–211, with the page for each.
When is Anant Chaturdashi 2028?
In Delhi, on Saturday, 2 September 2028, with the Ananta pūjā in the forenoon, 06:00 – 12:20. Every city on this page keeps the same day. Dharmasindhu p. 58
Is Ganesh Visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi?
Popularly, yes: Anant Chaturdashi is the last day of the Ganesh immersions in Maharashtra and elsewhere, and is often called Ganesh Visarjan Day. The texts read do not prescribe the immersion; they give the day to the Ananta vow. Dharmasindhu p. 58
Why can calendars differ by a day?
The texts read give two rules. The Dharmasindhu takes the Caturdaśī at sunrise lasting three muhūrtas, or failing that two. The Nirṇaya-sindhu takes the Caturdaśī covering midday on either day and calls the sunrise rule mistaken. They part when the Caturdaśī begins before midday on the earlier day and ends before midday on the later, at least two muhūrtas after sunrise: the Nirṇaya-sindhu then keeps the earlier day and the Dharmasindhu the later. This page follows the Dharmasindhu and shows the Nirṇaya-sindhu’s day beside it. Dharmasindhu p. 58; Nirṇaya-sindhu pp. 210–211
Why is the date different in the US or UK?
Anant Chaturdashi is decided by the Caturdaśī at sunrise at the city. The tithi begins and ends at the same moment everywhere, but sunrise and sunset come at different hours, so a city far to the west or east can keep another day. Dharmasindhu p. 58
How the day is found
Read the methodology- The day
- The Bhādrapada śukla Caturdaśī at sunrise, lasting three muhūrtas after it, or two by the secondary rule. Under two, the earlier day is kept, and the earlier day is also kept when it holds both sunrises. Dharmasindhu p. 58.
- The other rule
- The Caturdaśī covering midday on either day (Nirṇaya-sindhu p. 211), shown where it gives another day.
- Pūjā time
- The forenoon, sunrise to midday, while the Caturdaśī runs; failing that, midday, the third fifth of the daytime (Dharmasindhu p. 58).
- Sunrise and sunset
- At the centre of the Sun’s disc, with refraction, for the chosen city. Every date is that city’s own.
